310 Thrift Open to all Delegates!

We are excited to have “310 Thrift” at Camp Roberts, a concession stand hosted by the Westchester delegation! 310 Thrift  is a great way for MLC delegates to pick up low-cost, high-fashion business attire to wear at MLC in Sacramento. If you have any business attire to donate, please contact Jimi-Lee Tomboc at
jimi-leetomboc@ymcaLA.org.

Growing our Partnership with El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO)

For the second year, our Youth Board and Delegate Advisory Committee are leading our Youth in Action partnership with Project ECHO. Delegations, volunteers, and staff are encouraged to bring travel-size hygiene items and menstrual supplies to Camp Roberts for donation to those in need in the nearby communities. If you’d like to support this drive, please email calyginfo@ymcala.org to be connected to your local delegation.

Programming Updates!

Cal Y Y&G continues to expand and diversify our program offerings:

After a successful first year, International Convention (Icon), is back for year 2. In this fast-paced program, 160 Icon delegates voted to focus on International Labor and Workers' Rights, created proposals based on that theme, and then advocated to push their proposals through to be part of the joint resolution they crafted.

For the 77th MLC, we’re excited to introduce Special Interest Committees(SIC)! In SIC, delegates will choose a topic of community importance in specially themed committee groups. After drafting a proposal to solve this problem, delegates will compete in debate rounds in hopes of taking their proposals all the way to the Senate and Assembly floors on the last day of MLC. The final two proposals, if passed in both houses, will become California Joint Resolutions.

The Silicon Valley Coalition held their Student Mock Elections, using materials they created and received from the CA Secretary of State’s Office and the VCA Ambassador Team. SVC invented their own Mock Presidential Candidates and debated important CA measures currently on the ballot.

“They had an amazing time and look forward to Election Day when they get to work the voting polls,” - Elena Chavez, SVC Y&G Lead

Alumni Spotlight: Spencer M. Perry

Cal Y Y&G celebrates Spencer M. Perry (Albany YMCA), former 65th Youth Governor and Youth Board Member. Today, Spencer is a federal prosecutor specializing in international crime and corruption. Spencer began his career with the Obama Administration furthering climate change policy to stabilize international conflicts. He continued his career as then-Senator Kamala Harris's personal assistant (commonly referred to as a "bodyman") before serving as her legislative officer on foreign affairs, defense, veterans, criminal justice, and the economy.  Spencer wrote and helped pass legislation safeguarding the rights of survivors of sexual violence in the military, then served as a manager in Senator Harris's presidential campaign.  In his legal career, Spencer has prosecuted sexual violence in state and federal court, and has prosecuted genocide on behalf of the United Nations.  In his spare time, Spencer assists the Biden Administration's diplomatic missions, pets his dog, cooks Italian food, and over-waters his plants.

"Youth and Government was and is a source of passion and joy in my life. As a participant, Y&G inspired my confidence, drove my curiosity, and fostered lifelong friendships. Memories of stumbling through speeches on the Senate floor spur my creativity when I'm drafting oral arguments today. And I cherish the far flung peers I swapped stories with in Sacramento, many of which I count among my closest confidants today."- Spencer M. Perry

Thank you, Spencer, for allowing us to highlight your journey.
